The Daffodil (Narcissus) takes its name from a Greek hunter of renowned beauty. He spurned all lovers, including the nymph Echo, who faded away until only her voice remained.
As punishment, Nemesis (Goddess of Revenge) led Narcissus to a pool. There, he saw his own reflection and fell so deeply in love with it that he could not leave. He withered away from hunger and despair, or in some versions, drowned trying to embrace the image.
Where his body lay, the gods created the Narcissus flower. It nods its head downwards, forever gazing at its own reflection in the pool.
