Old Man's Salve
A gentle, antibiotic ointment for cuts, scrapes, and fungal spots. Usnea has been used as a wound dressing for combat for centuries due to its high usnic acid content.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Dried Usnea
  • 1 cup Olive Oil (or Sweet Almond Oil)
  • 1/4 cup Beeswax Pellets
  • Essential oils (optional: Tea Tree or Lavender)

The Process

1. Infuse: Place Usnea and Oil in a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler).
Heat gently on low for 3-4 hours.
Do not let the oil smoke or fry the lichen.

2. Strain: Strain the warm oil through cheesecloth into a clean jar/jug.
You can compost the spent lichen.

3. Thicken: Return the infused oil to the double boiler. Add the beeswax pellets and stir until completely melted.
Remove from heat, add essential oils if using (10-20 drops), and pour carefully into tins or small jars to set.
