Smell: Sweet, warming, and distinctly herbaceous.
Taste: Intensely sweet upfront, followed by a savory, earthy warmth.
Medicinal Benefits
Soothes Coughs & Throats: Thyme acts as a natural expectorant and antispasmodic, helping to relax the respiratory tract and loosen mucus, while honey physically coats and soothes irritated throat tissue.
Fights Infection: Both thyme and raw honey possess strong antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, helping your body fend off mild winter bugs.
Immune Support: Rich in antioxidants and gentle warmth, this syrup provides a daily lift for the immune system during cold season.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Fresh Thyme sprigs (or 1/4 cup dried)
- 1 cup Raw Honey (preferably local)
- A clean, sterilized glass jar with a tight-fitting lid
The Process
- Prepare: Ensure your thyme is clean and completely dry to prevent molding. Bruise the fresh thyme sprigs slightly to release their volatile oils.
- Combine: Place the thyme sprigs into your clean glass jar.
- Pour: Slowly cover the thyme completely with the raw honey, ensuring no plant matter is exposed to air. Use a chopstick to stir gently and release any trapped air bubbles.
- Steep: Seal the jar tightly. Store it in a cool, dark place for at least a week. For a stronger, more therapeutic infusion, let it steep for 2-4 weeks. Flip the jar gently every few days.
- Use: Take a teaspoon directly as needed, or stir into warm water or tea to soothe a cough and sore throat.
