Ingredients

  • 1 cup Fresh St. John's Wort flowers and buds (tightly packed)
  • High-proof alcohol (like Vodka or Brandy, ideally 80-100 proof) sufficient to cover
  • A clean, sterilized glass mason jar with a tight-fitting lid

The Process

  1. Forage: Harvest fresh flowers and buds on a sunny day. Ensure they are dry of morning dew.
  2. Prepare: Roughly chop or gently bruise the flowers to help release their active properties.
  3. Pack: Fill your mason jar about 2/3 full with the prepared plant matter.
  4. Pour: Cover the herbs completely with your high-proof alcohol, aiming for a 1:2 ratio (one part herb to two parts alcohol). Stir gently to release any trapped air bubbles.
  5. Steep: Seal the jar tightly and place it in a cool, dark cabinet. Let it steep for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking the jar gently every few days. The liquid will slowly extract the compounds and turn a beautiful ruby red.
  6. Strain & Store: Strain the liquid through cheesecloth into an amber glass dropper bottle, squeezing the herbs to get all the liquid. Store in a cool, dark place.
  7. Dosage: Typically, 1/2 to 1 teaspoon (about 30-60 drops) diluted in water, 1-3 times daily as needed. (Consult a herbalist before use, especially if taking other medications).
