St. John's Wort: The Sun Bringer
The Plant & Its Magic
St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a vibrant, sun-loving herb steeped in ancient Midsummer magic. Traditionally known as the "scare-devil" (Fuga Daemonum), it was believed to hold immense solar energy to ward off negative spirits.
Medicinally, it is a profound healer. Internally, it is famous for nervous system support, easing anxiety, and relieving menopause symptoms. Topically, its iconic red oil is rubbed into the skin to soothe deep nerve pain, burns, and wounds.
Step 1: Harvesting
The best time to harvest is on a bright, sunny day (folklore says Midsummer's Eve!). You want to gather the fresh, bright yellow flowers and unopened buds to place in your harvest basket.
To ensure you have the correct plant, squeeze a fresh yellow flower bud firmly between your fingers. It should exude a striking, deep red sap. This is the magical medicinal compound, hypericin, revealing itself!

This red sap is the unmistakable signature of true St. John's Wort and the secret behind its powerfully healing oil.
Step 2: Preparation
Once harvested, allow your flowers to gently wilt for a few hours. This reduces their moisture content, which prevents your oil from turning rancid. For maximum potency, lightly bruise the flowers in a mortar and pestle to help break the cell walls and release the oils.
Step 3: The Sun Steep
Loosely pack the wilted flowers into a clean mason jar, filling it about 3/4 full. Pour your chosen carrier oil (like olive or sweet almond oil) over the flowers until they are completely submerged. Poke with a chopstick to release air bubbles.
Unlike most infused oils that prefer darkness, St. John's Wort needs the sun! Secure the lid and place the jar in a sunny window for 4 to 6 weeks.
Step 4: Straining & Storing
Over time, the oil will miraculously transform into a brilliant, glowing crimson red. Once it has reached a deep red hue, it's time to strain it.
Pour the mixture through cheesecloth or a fine-mesh sieve into a clean bowl or apothecary jar. Be sure to squeeze the plant material tightly to extract every last drop of the precious red medicine. Store your finished infused oil in a cool, dark cabinet.
